The best of Czech lagers are a simply glorious thing; complex malt character combined with the spicy herbal quality of Saaz hops give us a beer that’s supremely drinkable and yet exciting for your palate. Únětický pivovar is hands down our favorite brewery for awesome lagers, and when we heard that Putica also had Únětický‘s lovely 12° lager on tank, we had to try it. And it was everything we hoped for; exceptionally fresh, with a creamy frothy head, Putica served Únětické beer just like it should be.

On tap, Putica always pours Únětické 10° and 12°, with only 12° being served from the tank. They also serve seasonal specials like Únětický’s lovely Christmas beer (think a creamy, ginger-bread malty amber lager…in our opinion the best Czech Christmas beer).

As for eats, Putica serves a small menu of tapas style snacks and burgers. Their hummus plate is a nice twist on what normally constitutes hummus and is more like a salad; complete with fresh mozzarella cheese, rocket, sun-dried tomatoes, and pine nuts, it’s a large, healthy portion. They say they focus on seasonal dishes, but we haven’t seen much change in their menu thus far. They serve wines from Czech wineries Sedlák and Krásná Hora, and also have Kliment cider.

Service is fast, friendly, and professional. The interior is pleasant, and warmer in atmosphere than the current trend of minimal string bulbs and bland colors. This is a large space, so your chances of getting a table are better than most places around. The crowd is extremely diverse; you’ll see anyone from older folks enjoying a fresh pint to young and trendy office types.

Originally opened on Anglická on the other side of Náměstí Míru, Putica’s relocation to the top of Retro Music hall is a much welcomed addition to Náměstí Míru. Retro’s old restaurant in the past served abominable Staropramen. When considering the boring and repetitive multi-tap bars serving craft beer that have flocked along the square, a place with Únětické from the tank is an oasis for those who want a drinkable, affordable, and conversational beer.
